art walk

we had a fun evening walking around downtown at our city's monthly art walk. we started the evening with some delicious pork tacos & handmade chips at a new (awesome) hole-in-the-wall restaurant. they only serve a few items & everything on the chalkboard menu is $7 & so delicious. after dinner, we strolled the streets & listened to live music while browsing all the local artist's booths. we ended up at the museum of contemporary art to check out their 60s exhibit, which was really excellent. thought I'd share a few shots from the evening. happy mid-week!

temporary christmas art

I love decking out the house for chirstmas. but we have a small house & don't have tons of extra space for keeping all of my christmas decor. so I'm always looking for creative solutions for storage.

I saw this beautiful print (I adore maps) designed by angela hardison & thought it would look perfect in one of the frames I already own. I downloaded it here on her blog for free (yes, free!) & then had it printed at mpix in a size that would fit the frame. when christmas is over, I'll just put the photo behind the poster that was already in the frame. perfect, easy storage. or I may even decide keep it up all year. such a great reminder of what christmas is all about.

music poster show

a few months ago robert designed a poster for a local poster show. the rules were simple: choose a song that inspires you & then design a poster around it. he chose m83's "midnight city" (so envious that my sister got to go see them last week in concert!). listen to the song here (oh, and just for the record- this was before victoria secret started using the song in their commercial!) then check out his poster. pretty clever, huh? he's good. ;)

{music inspiration}

{see the city in the keys??}
 {there were over 75 posters in the show!}
 {loved these simple cotton clouds hanging from the ceiling}
{tons of great designers}
 {see the tv reference in this one?}

barbie christmas tree

growing up, my sister kara & I were obsessed with barbies. kara had a huge wooden doll house in her room that our grandpa built. all the rooms were wallpapered a different theme & we would spend hours sitting in front of it, setting up different scenarios & clothing the barbies appropriately. there were complicated love triangles in the pink limousine, custody battles in the ice cream shop & rock concerts in the steam from our vaporizer. yes, we were imaginative (& perhaps watched too much 90210).

in fact to this day, if kara is trying to describe someone I don't know to me, she'll say something like, "you know, he looks like our barbie allen (remember? married to julie with the quintuplets), but has the personality of steve (who got divorced from mary-with-no-legs who has that bratty step-kid, megan starr)". and instinctively, I understand.

so obviously, no one can appreciate a barbie christmas tree like I can. robert & I spotted this one when we were visiting family in charlottesville, virginia a few christmases ago. isn't it fun?

“hembakat är bäst” {"homemade is best"}

as if ikea isn't cool enough, they now have a new baking book called, “hembakat är bäst” {"homemade is best"}. isn't the food styling brilliant? evelina bratell did all of the styling & carl kleiner photographed the book. these images should hang in a modern art museum!

on the roof of the MET

when I was in nyc a few weeks ago, I visited the coolest exhibit on the roof of the metropolitan museum of art. It’s called big bambú & it’s basically tons of fresh-cut bamboo poles strung together with nylon rope. but it’s massive- like about 50 feet high. the artists (twin brothers doug & mike starn) have been adding to it each month. it’s extremely impressive, especially set against the beautiful new york city skyline.

I'd rather be thrifting

I love ashleyg; we have a couple of her prints hanging in our home. when I saw her most recent "I'd rather be thrifting" print, I knew it would be the perfect gift for my vintage-loving sister, who is the queen of thrift stores & estate sales. I bought a frame & then had a matte cut to fit. turned out pretty darn cute!

vancouver winter olympics

robert have I have been obsessed with watching the winter olympics. the men's snowboarding half-pipe on wednesday was incredible. did you see shaun white's new move?
I love what google is doing with their homepage each day. the design is beautiful. I have tried googling for the artist, with no luck (a bit ironic, huh?).
